O'Brien Irish call up surprise
Andy O'Brien looks set for his first Republic of Ireland cap this summer after Mick McCarthy insisted he had improved since moving to Newcastle.
The 21-year-old join The Magpies in a £2million switch in March and has been a virtual ever-present in Bobby Robson's side since.
But he has still only played six times for Newcastle, prompting raised eyebrows over Eire boss McCarthy's comments, who persistently overlooked O'Brien for a full international call-up when he was with The Bantams.
McCarthy said: "I've seen a lot of Andy recently and it is clear that he's become a better player since joining Newcastle. I think he's now ready to be playing international football."
O'Brien, already capped at Under-21 level, looks to have a bright future on Tyneside, but is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
He said: "It's good to know that I am being considered for the Irish team but for the time being I need to concentrate on Newcastle's remaining games."
