Atherton to get City back upAdam Bell Monday, June 04, 2001 07:59 GMT

Peter Atherton has insisted he is committed to helping The Bantams win promotion next term after his proposed move to Birmingham fell through. The versatile defender looked set for a summer switch to St Andrews after a three month loan stint in the Midlands. But when The Blues failed to win promotion to the top flight themselves, Atherton returned to Valley Parade. He is now back on Bradford's books but has confirmed his intentions to give his all to City's cause next term. The former Sheffield Wednesday man said: "I've two years of my contract to run and as far as I'm concerned I am a Bradford City player and will remain so until I hear otherwise." Atherton also seems confident of a promotion push from a 'new-look' City side next season. He said: "I didn't see many games towards the end of the season but from what I understand they did quite well so we must have a chance of bouncing straight back again next season."
