Match Report: Trelawny 50 Newport 40Graham Hambly Wednesday, April 17, 2002 12:34 GMT
TRELAWNY took over at the top of the Western Group of the Premier Trophy with their home win over Newport on Tuesday evening.
The victory came despite losing skipper Seemond Stephens with a hand injury in the opening race.
Stephens and visiting skipper Craig Watson fell on the first bend. Although both riders were able to take part in the re-run, Stephens failed to complete the race and had to withdraw from the meeting for hospital treatment.
Reserves Richard Wolff and Simon Phillips turned in excellent performances to cover for Stephens while heat-leaders Chris Harris and Emiliano Sanchez were also on top form.
Harris, unbeaten by an opponent in his two previous home meetings, dropped his first point to a visitor at the Moto Parc this season when he was beaten by Watson in heat 11.
The 10-point winning margin on the night saw Trelawny wipe out their two-point deficit from the previous match at Newport to take the aggregate bonus point.
They must now beat Swindon at the Moto Parc next Tuesday to qualify for the Premier Trophy semi-finals.
