100% Record Goes - but Staff Still Unbeaten

Jim Nicholson  Monday, June 25, 2001  16:56 GMT

EUSCC's 100% record didn't quite make
it to the midpoint of the season as an obdurate
batting performance by Dunfermline 2 prevented
the Staff from claiming the wickets they needed
for their 7th consecutive win.

The Staff batted first and Paul B with Nick, his
new opening partner, built an excellent opening
stand as they played sensibly and securely in putting
on 82 together. Nick departed for 30-odd but Paul
kept going, with Richard for company, before finally
falling for 57. The run rate then increased over the
next 20 or so overs as Richard, Neil and Stewart all
hit their shots and scored 20's and 30's. In the last
couple of overs Dave F and Paul D took the total
over 200 with some big shots - especially Paul's
two sixes.

Dunfermline's target was 210 and they set about getting
it with a solid resolve. Gideon made the first breakthrough
but the runs kept accumulating as the Staff bowlers
failed to find much help from a batsman's pitch.
Chris and Stewart both chipped in with wickets
when they were brought into the attack, followed by Hamish
with two and a couple of run outs. Into the last
8 overs and Dunfermline needed less than 50 but
soon they were down to their last two batsmen
and their objective changed from scoring to not getting
out. This they achieved, despite the pressure put
on them by the Staff fielding, and so EUSCC's
run of 6 straight wins was brought to an end
with a winning draw.
