Arabians 1 - New Ward A 3Lee Cox Thursday, April 19, 2001 13:40 GMT
New Ward fielded a near full strength side against their old enemies, Arabians.
Paul Tucker, recently installed as player-manager chose to stick with his favoured
3-5-2 formation. At the back were Warren " Go-lightly Ward holding hands with
Dave " Hello ducky " Steadman, and Brian " reefer " Hunt.
In midfield, were PaulTukcer, the ever impressive Gary Montague , Paul " costa del "
Shore, the midfield dragon Billy, together with the power-house of Micky Babb.
New Ward were due to start this match again against half an Arabians team. After
their 55 year old gypsy look-a-like manager started to put his kit on, pulling his socks
over his two false legs, and only two weeks prior to his hip replacement, and triple by
pass. It was then that New Ward took pity on Arabians, and decided to offer the
services of two of their players, being the ever popular Gary " fat westlife" Steadman,
and Macca, despite the bitter dispute between the clubs, after dirty, scummy Arabians
had got New Ward thrown out of the cup.
New Ward started brightly, with many chances being created, Gavin failing to
capatalise on chances, quite frankly even I could put away. Despite this, New Ward
looked strong, with the huge presence of Ibsen, making surging runs, and using his
agility to leave midfielders and defenders trailing in his wake.
New Ward took their chance to gain the upper hand on this match, when Gavin
surprisinlgy managed to slot the ball home after some strong attacking and good work
down the right. New Ward started to capatalise on their dominance of this match
when Gary Montague, again very impressive, managed to drill the ball home from
just outside the area after some tough tackling in midfield. New Ward were 2-0 up
at half time, and deservedly so.
New Ward went out into the second half with much the same attitude as the first half,
but rather disappointingly they were to concede a goal after some sloppy defending
from love's young dream Warren Ward, who looked like he was lacking concentration,
possibly due to thoughts of food or his wife -to-be.
It was then decided that changes needed to be made. Adie Babb was brought on
for his brother Micky Babb who had again put in a solid peformance. Adie's
contribution was almost instant, after taking a chance really well and firing the ball
home past a keeper, whom for the majority of this match had been outstanding.
New Ward attpempted to try and consolidate their lead by pushing forward, Warren
Ward shifted his considerable frame up to a midfield position, but this tactical switch
was to backfire, as New Wards when on the attatck, were continually caught offside
due to the fact that Mr.Ward's belly was deemed to be interfeering with play, and was
ruled offside.
Also due to Warrens rather large posterior, unlucky Mr.Ward was guilty
of playing the Arabians midfield on-side, even when deep inside the oppositions
half. New Ward played out this match and were unlucky not to build on their lead
after substitute Mark Bird, who's blistering pac ripped the Arabians defence apart,
failed to convert from a few yards out after a strong tackle.
