Blues end season in styleBen Sullivan Tuesday, May 08, 2001 21:32 GMT
Southend ended the division 3 campaign with a suberb 3-1 win over Mansfield Town. This game was specially rearranged as a benefit match for the referee, mr North, who tragically died in the abandoned original tie. All net gate receipts will go to the family, and also all money raised for various fanzines and in collection buckets across the ground.
The first half was dull and scrappy, and Southend fell behind, when the ball squirmed underneath an unsigted Darryl Flahaven. But Southend burst into life in the second half, and finally they made the breakthrough as Hutchings crossed in for the ball to be headed home by eventul Man of the match Stuart Thurgood.
Tes Bramble replced Daniel Webb, and was a constant threat, and eventually scored as he rounded off Mansfield keeper Bobby Mimms and blasted in. The in stoppage time, southend won a free-kick 30 yards or so out, and left back Damon Searle rounded off a fine individual performance woth a beautiful left footed shot which flew in.
Southend now look forward to more of the same next season, and thanked the fans with a lap of honour after the game
