EUSCC Freeze Against StudentsJim Nicholson Friday, May 11, 2001 15:55 GMT
Thursday night's game against the Uni 3rd XI was
played in a bitterly cold wind and with the haar
rolling in off the North Sea - quite a shock to the
players who had been looking forward to an evening'
of warm sunshine after a very pleasant day.
Paul B, captain for the day, won the toss and put
the students in to bat. As usual, the students
didn't take things too seriously and reversed their
batting order. Thus hopes were raised as Gareth
claimed two wickets, both clean-bowled, in the first
over and Stewart got in on the act with another in
the second. 10-3 off 2 overs soon became 40-6 off 8
and then 90-9 off 17. By now though they had their
class batsmen in and they rattled 30-odd off the
last three overs to finish somewhere in the vicinity
of 130-9 from 20 overs.
Naturally this was all a bit demoralising for the
staff and the target set never looked likely, especially
with the students performing so well and energetically
in the field. Once again though it was left to only
one or two of their players to do all of the damage.
The staff innings made it to 80-something for 6 off
their alloted overs - before everyone headed off home
to try to warm up as the mists closed in. We will be looking
for revenge on the 7th June.
