U9 Saints come out on top in 4-3 thrillerJohn Rusted Monday, July 29, 2002 11:43 GMT
Another rematch with friendly rivals Coventry Jaguar ended with a well deserved win for the Saints. With a couple of players missing Lewis Edwards made a guest appearance and linked up well with Matthew Tallett creating two of Matt's goals. The very hot conditions should have slowed the match down but it was played at a very fast pace. Bulkington took the lead early on, when a Tom Johnson corner clipped the bar before Jack Steele slotted into the net. Matt made it 2-0 as he ran onto a through ball as the keeper hesitated and he finished it off. Jaguar got themselves into the game for a short spell when a corner wasn't cleared and a Jaguar player bundled the ball in at the back post. Bulkington restored a two goal lead just before the break when Matt collected a cleaver pass from Lewis Edwards, he ran on to beat the defence and buried the ball in the far corner. Jaguar got a goal back early in the second period as the Saints defence left a player unmarked in the box from a right wing cross and he beat Lewis Gibbs.A spell of end to end play looked to have killed the game but Bulkington extended their lead as Matt Tallett completed his hat-trick heading home Toms corner to make it 4-2. Another goal from Jaguar in the last five minutes made the score look closer than it should have been but the final score of 4-3 helped to make up for our defeat in the final at Keresley by the same Jaguar lads. Matthew Tallett has now scored 7 goals in 4 friendly games lets hope he can carry that form into the league matches in the Autumn.
