Mixed fortunes at Nuneaton Boys TournamentJohn Rusted Sunday, August 11, 2002 21:52 GMT
Three of our sides have played in the Nuneaton Boys Club tournament this weekend, with mixed results. On Saturday the Braves and Saints played in an eight team U8 competition, whilst the Rockets played at U9 on Sunday morning. Saturday's action saw our sides up against teams from Nuneaton Boys Tigers and Yenton Bears, and two teams from both Grove Farm and Bedworth Eagles.
After a slow start the Saints eventually finished second in the group resulting in a semi final against Grove Farm Giants, which Bulkington lost 3-1( the second time Grove Farm have beaten the Saints in a semi this summer).
The Braves were short of three key players and found things difficult, but gradually began to cause problems for the other sides. In the last two games they really posed problems for Yenton and Bulkington Saints without getting a result, finishing an undeserved bottom of the group. The eventual winners were Yenton Bears, beating Grove Farm Giants 3-0 in the final.
Sunday's action saw the U9 Bulkington Rockets take on sides from Bedworth Eagles Colts, Stockingford Swifts, Coundon Cockerels, Whitestone Cobras and Nuneaton Boys Terriers. The lads had a much improved showing today with a record of 2 wins, 2 draws and one defeat. They missed out on the semis by the narrowest one point margin to Stockingford, who they had beaten 2-0 in their final game. Stockingford and Whitestone qualified to play Wyken and Weddington Thistle in the Semi-finals.
