England's Historic Heroes
ENGLAND'S 5-1 victory over Germany in the World Cup qualifier in Munich on Saturday 1st September 2001 is an historic result – in a number of ways:
1. It represents only Germany’s second-ever loss in 61 World Cup qualifiers.
2. It was the biggest-ever England win against Germany, eclipsing the 6-3 victory in Berlin back in 1938.
3. England gained their first win in Germany since 1965, when the soon-to-be-crowned World Champions won a friendly in Nuremburg.
4. Germany had been unbeaten for 28 years in Munich. 5. Michael Owen joins Sir Geoff Hurst as the scorer of a hat-trick against Germany.
England’s overall record against Germany is now P25 W11 D5 L9 (a statistical convention counts penalty shoot-out matches as draws – and even ignoring that, the two teams would now be level).
