Speedway Back at Ellesmere Port

Steve Harland  Sunday, July 08, 2001  14:55 GMT

PREMIER LEAGUE SPEEDWAY looks certain to be returning to Ellesmere Port next season following a public meeting which attracted over 200 people.

In attendance were prospective promoter Tony Mole, Graham Drury (a former Ellesmere rider), Peter and Les Collins and three local councillors. Only 14 people objected to speedway coming back.

It is intended for the Gunners to race on Friday evenings with a 10pm curfew and occasional Sunday and Bank Holiday meetings.

Thornton Road is now in a state of disrepair but Tony Mole has promised to improve spectator facilities when he gets the go-ahead to bring the sport back to Cheshire. The stadium was hosting greyhound racing up until last year but these meetings have since ceased.

The Gunners last rode in 1985 when former Bear David Walsh (pic) was part of the National League championship side that pipped Middlesbrough right at the death (how can we forget?).
